Composition:

Each one sachet contains:

Neomycin sulphate                                         1.0       gm

Sulphaguanidine                                             2.5       gm

Phthalyl sulphathiasole                                   1.5       gm

Properties:

Diastop is a combination of :

Neomycin which is an aminoglycoside class antibiotic characterized by bactericidal action against most gram- negative pathogens: E. coli sp., Salmonella sp., Proteus sp., Haemophilus sp., Klebsiella sp. Shigella sp., Pasteurella sp., and gram- positive: Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp., Corynebacterium sp.

Sulfaguanidine is an anti-infectious agent belonging to the family of sulfonamides. It blocks the synthesis of folic acid by microorganisms thus stopping the vital processes generating a bacteriostatic effect

Indications:

used for treatment of diarrhea associated with salmonellosis that caused by Salmonella spp.

and reduce mortalities associated with Colibacillosis caused by Escherichia coli and the diarrhea caused by any of the susceptible organisms that mentioned above.

Target species: Cattle.

Dosage& Route of administration:

Route of administration: Orally.

Neomycin sulphate

Cattle: 4 – 7.5 g/day PO divided 2-4 times daily at regular intervals. Calves: 2 – 3g/day PO divided 2-4 times daily at regular intervals

Sulphaguanidine

54 mg per kg of live weight per day for 3 to 4 days corresponding to: Calves: 1 tablespoon of powder (15 g) per animal per day

Phthalyl sulphathiazole

50 mg per kg of body weight per day for 5 days.

For whole product

Cattle                   : 2-4 sachets / day for 2 to 3 days. Calves                  : 1-2 sachets / day for 2 to 3 days. The powder should be administered by a feeding bottle mixed with any suitable liquid including milk.

Warning & Precaution:

  • Administer in a good quantity of water to consume the dose completely.
  • Prepare the medicated water daily.
  • Do not administer with neuromuscular blockers, general anesthetics, antidiuretics or other aminoglycosides.
  • Kaolin/pectin should also not
replace adequate fluid/electrolyte monitoring or replacement therapy in severe or chronic diarrheas.

Contraindication

*Do not administer to dehydrated animals, with kidney failure or respiratory depression. Do not administer to animals with history of hypersensitivity to the antibiotic.* *Prolonged use may cause bad absorption syndrome and intestinal dysbacteriosis. *At high doses and for long periods it can cause nephrotoxic and ototoxic effects. Safety has not been studied for pregnancy and lactation in target species. The use of the product in these cases is not recommended.

Side Effects

  • The prolonged use can cause malabsorption syndrome & intestinal dysbacteriosis.
  • At high dose and prolonged use can cause nephrotoxic and ototoxic effect.
  • Neomycin is particularly toxic to the auditory and renal system.
  • Aminoglycosides may impair neuromuscular transmission if used peri-operatively in association with anesthesia.
Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes. Gastrointestinal disorders, anorexia, muscle weakness, incoordination were observed
