Opi-Arthridine

Dosage Form :Injection

Each  ml contains :

Phenylbutazone                         200 mg

Sodium salicylate                        20 mg

Pharmacological action :

Phenylbutazone is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic agent .

Sodium salicylate is a salicylic acid derivative that has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic actions similar to those of aspirin .

Both has synergic effect and they inhibit cyclo-oxygenase, (prostaglandin synthetase) thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins .

Sodium salicylate antagonize  the gastrointestinal ulcerogenic effect of phenylbutazone .

Indications :

Anti-inflammatory  treatment of the musculoskeletal affections (arthritis, luxation, tendenitis)

Inflammatory complications of various traumatic and  microbial affections .

Aid in treatment of acute pneumopathy .

Treatment of lameness in horses .

It is used as an analgesic/anti-inflammatory, antipyrexic in horses.

Contraindications

Horses with cardiac, renal or hepatic diseases where there is a possibility of gastrointestinal  ulceration or bleeding . Hypersensitivity to the drug or treatment with other NSAID . Race horses prior to racing and Pregnant mares . concurrent administration with aminoglycosides  . Animals less than 30 days of age, less than 7 days before surgery .

Side effect

Prolonged use may cause gastrointestinal lesions, inappetance, vomiting and diarrhea .

Drug interaction

phenylbutazone is highly bound to plasma proteins and may displace other highly bound drugs like phenytoin, valproic acid, sulphonamides and other anti-inflammatory agents .

Warnings

Caution with use in animals less than 6 weeks of age or aged  animals . Avoid use in dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypertensive patients . Avoid concurrent administration  of potentially nephrotoxic  drugs . Stop medication at the first sign of gastrointestinal upset , jaundice or blood discrasia. In the treatment of inflammatory conditions associated with infections, specific anti-infective therapy is required  .

Dosage & administrations

Slow intravenous injection . Horses & foals Intially 5 – 10 ml per 225 kg per day Subsequent doses, depending on response, may be reduced to 2.2 – 5 ml per 225 kg per day. Treatment should be continued for 5 – 6 days

Storage

Store between 2 - 8° C (Refrigerate. Don’t freeze). Protect from light.

Withdrawal time

Not to be used in horses intended for human consumption.
